The Highlander Who Loved Me by Adrienne Basso – Book Review

Rating: ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆

The Highlander Who Loved Me is the first book that I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading by Adrienne Basso and I really liked her writing style.  The words flowed really well and the story plot was a pretty good one.  It was released December 29th, 2015 by Kensington Books so it’s a super new release that I had the good fortune of getting through NetGalley.

But while the books was very well written, the issue I had with it was the personality of the heroine. You might be thinking, ‘DANG! You dropped the rating 2 stars just because you didn’t like the heroine??’ Indeed I did because it made it very hard to relate to the story even though it was a good plot.

At the beginning of the book, the hero, James, and heroine, Davina, are attacked by brigands and she completely lets this situation run her life for 5 YEARS!!! And while I understand that something like that affects a person’s life, it was really hard to get past Davina’s pity-party when she wasn’t even certain what happened to her during the attack because she blacked out halfway through it. It was pretty hard to relate to her during the first 1/2 to 3/4 of the book when she acted as such. But as the story progressed, she finally started coming out if it and choosing not to let a bad doing in her life ruin it’s entirety.

While the heroine’s personality wasn’t for me I loved James’ character. Yeah he ran off to the Crusade’s when Davina changed her mind about marrying him but at least he didn’t lock himself up like she did and become frightened of everything.  I REALLY liked his brother Malcolm too! I will definitely give the next book a read if Basso writes another one in this story!
