War’s Passion (Sons of War #1) by Lia Davis – Book Review

warpassion

Rating: ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆

I’m really into mythology as well mystical fantasy stuff so when I read the description for War’s Passion, book one in the Sons of War series by Lia Davis, I just had to give it a read.  Check out the summary:

After losing her parents in a brutal attack from a monster straight out of her nightmares, Gwendolyn Preston tries to pick up the shattered pieces of her life. Along with her best friend, she moves to a small fishing village on the coast of Maine to find a new life away from the nightmares that haunt her. Just when she believes her life could go back to normal, the deliciously dark and handsome Markus Sullivan disrupts her hopes to grieve in peace.

Markus drew the short straw when it came to being the liaison between his father, Ares—God of War—and his brothers. When he discovers that the earth bound demi-gods, known as the descendants, have banded together to start another rebellion against the gods, it becomes his number one priority to stop them.

That is until he meets Gwen, the granddaughter of Aphrodite, and the next target of the descendants. Together, their path is rife with passion and danger. It might take more than the son of War to win this battle…Gwen herself.

First off I’m not quite sure why the book was named what it was.  The book is not about War’s Passion but War’s, Ares’, dragon son and his mate.  That threw me off a bit.  I feel the title of a book should give me some idea as to what the story is about, which in this case, it didn’t.

Secondly, while I loved how it included lots about Greek mythology and the Gods, it was a bit too cheesy and dramatic for my tastes.  The main character Gwen was rather whiny and a complete pushover.  Even during the times it seemed as though she was standing her ground or putting her foot down, she still came across as shaky and weak.  I mean come on!  Would you let some dude FORCE you to have to stay and sleep in his bedroom when you didn’t even know him and were somewhat fearful of him??  I sure as hell wouldn’t!  She also had a tendency to cry quite often and ran away consistently instead of dealing with the issues at hand.  And don’t get me started on how she wanted to blame all kinds of people for the death of her father, especially Aphrodite her G-ma, who didn’t step in to save him in the beginning of the book because she was saving Gwen’s ass!  There was a comment made in part of the book that she had studied along side her father in mythology so she knew all the stories of the Gods.  So if that were true, would she not have known that the Gods/Goddesses couldn’t interfere or have direct contact with their children??  Too much of the story had holes in it and things that didn’t seem to line up with other pieces of the story to me.

Markus, the hero of the book, wasn’t too bad I guess.  Though I do wish the story would have actually built more up them being mates instead of just be all like, ‘Oh they’re in love now…..no rhyme of reason to it cause it just IS!’.  I personally don’t buy into that mess. Give me more than just ‘they are fated’, given that both Gwen and Markus seemed like complete opposites and not meant to be together based on their interactions.  The only thing they remotely connected on was sex, which was far and in between.  And even then that is not enough to build an eternal bond on!

I’m still debating on whether or not I am going to give book number two a try.  It has to do with Ashlynn, daughter of Artemis goddess of the hunt, and the scared up dragon Ty.  I was intrigued by both character’s personalities and how they acted around each other but if the story doesn’t build and follows the first one ‘s feeling of falling flat, then I will be extremely disappointed.

Here are all of the books in the Sons of War series:

#1 – War’s Passion (Sons of War #1)
#2 – Ashes of War (Sons of War #2)
#3 – Artemis’ Hunt (Sons of War #2.5)
#4 – Chaotic War (Sons of War #3)

Lady Isabella’s Scandalous Marriage (Mackenzies & McBrides #2) by Jennifer Ashley – Book Review

7070067

Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★

Yet again another fabulous book by Jennifer Ashley!

Lady Isabella’s Scandalous Marriage is the second book in Ashley’s The Mackenzies and Mcbrides series.  And while this one was not as emotionally pulling as Ian and Beth’s book, I love it just the same!   Check out the Goodreads synopsis:

Six years ago, eighteen-year-old Lady Isabella Scranton scandalized all of London by eloping the night of her come-out ball with the notorious rake, Lord Mac Mackenzie. After three turbulent years of marriage, she scandalized London once again—this time by leaving him.

Now Mac has resurfaced, every bit as charismatic, and with one goal: to seduce Isabella back into his life and his bed even if it means acting like a real gentleman. But when Isabella rises to the challenge of posing nude for Mac’s erotic paintings, her pent-up hunger for the decadent rake is exposed as well, and she finds herself unable to resist the smooth strokes of an artist at work.

But someone’s been watching them—dangerously close. This ingenious forger with designs on Mac’s paintings also sets his sights on Isabella herself. Deciding to become Isabella’s protector, Mac vows to never leave her side, whether his independent and proud lady likes it or not.

The lil pieces that you got to see of Mac in the first book had me getting excited for his story.  He seemed tough, yet caring, brooding, yet full of life.  Isabella was very much a female version of him I think.   She didn’t joke around as much as he did but they were book genuinely good people, who always looked out for others.  Isabella taking Beth under her wing in the first book and Mac taking care of Isabella’s family despite them disowning her or hating him in this book.

I always like the romance novels that have to do with married couples.  The ones where the people are in an estranged marriage yet find away to come back together despite the bullshit that made it initially crumble are just lovely.  Another book that comes to mind with that subject is Monica McCarty‘s The Saint.  Fabulous book!  The ‘fixing their marriage’ romances are ones that I think every relationship councilor should require every couple on their roster to read.  They show that no relationship is perfect but if you love someone, and I mean TRUELY LOVE someone, then there is always a way to make it work.  Wouldn’t I make a great couples therapist?!??  “That’s right Tom….you must read ALL the chapters to Sara.  And do it with passion!”  Haha

This has really started out a glorious series so far.  Something I have begun to love about it is the fact that so far, you have gotten to see all of the characters throughout both books.  Even though this was Isabella and Mac’s book, you saw a lot of Ian, Beth, Daniel, Cam, etc in it.  It’s like you continue to catch glimpses of the previous book characters and gt to keep current on what they are doing in life.  If all of the other books are this intertwined with the characters it is going to be awesome!  I totally think historical romance lovers should get on board with this series!!

The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie (Mackenzies & McBrides #1) by Jennifer Ashley – Book Review

Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Oooooo lordy this book was gooooooood!

I have to say that I have found the next series I plan to devour, so thank you Jennifer Ashley for writing The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie, first book in The Mackenzies and Mcbrides series!  Check out the except from Goodreads:

The year is 1881. Meet the Mackenzie family–rich, powerful, dangerous, eccentric. A lady couldn’t be seen with them without ruin. Rumors surround them–of tragic violence, of their mistresses, of their dark appetites, of scandals that set England and Scotland abuzz.

The youngest brother, Ian, known as the Mad Mackenzie, spent most of his young life in an asylum, and everyone agrees he is decidedly odd. He’s also hard and handsome and has a penchant for Ming pottery and beautiful women.

Beth Ackerley, widow, has recently come into a fortune. She has decided that she wants no more drama in her life. She was raised in drama–an alcoholic father who drove them into the workhouse, a frail mother she had to nurse until her death, a fussy old lady she became constant companion to. No, she wants to take her money and find peace, to travel, to learn art, to sit back and fondly remember her brief but happy marriage to her late husband.

And then Ian Mackenzie decides he wants her.

The first of a new historical series.

And here is the lil one from her website:

It was whispered all through London Society that Ian Mackenzie was mad, that he’d spent his youth in an asylum, and was not to be trusted-especially with a lady. Yet Beth found herself inexorably drawn to the Scottish lord. Despite his decadence and his intimidating intelligence, she could see that he needed help- her help.

Because suddenly the only thing that made sense to her was … the madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie.

The description of the book drew me in super quick when I happened to be browsing my library’s ebook collect online.  I’ve been looking for a new set of books to start since I got caught up on the Clans of Kalquor series by Tracy St. John and was super executed to see that they had all of the books in The Mackenzies and Mcbrides series!  Honestly though, after reading this first story and absolutely LOVING it, I plan on buying these books and totally telling my mom about them.  She loves reading romances just like I do and we randomly ask every now and again if the other has read a specific book or anything by a particular author.   The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie is one such book I will totally be asking her about!

I loved how Ashley wrote the first book of the set with a hero that was far from perfect.  Writing an amazing story with one of the main characters having Asbergers Syndrome was absolutely brilliant on her part!  It goes to show that no matter what a persons ‘disability’, we’re all beautiful being who deserve our own love story.  I was absolutely intrigued with Ian’s character with all of his eccentrics.  And the fact that Beth looked past what society focused on in regards to on the outside of Ian, and was able to see someone who was lovable and kind, made her become one of my favorite book heroines ever!  I love characters who have a natural humility towards other people.

In this book you get to see how Ian struggles with the syndrome, as everyone who has it does, and how he tries to control some of the side effects of it because, while he doesn’t know it in the beginning, he’s falling in love with Beth.  Damn I love me a good love story!!

You guys have gotta read this book!  I plan on starting Isabella and Mac’s book once I get done posting this review!!

Given that I’ve only read the first book in the series so far, I’m going to list the publication order listed on Ashley’s website instead of the chronological order.  Typically I would prefer the chronological order after reading all of the books, but when I first start reading a series I like to read them in the order that they were released, as if I were getting the brand new books as they originally came out to the public!  Here it is:

#1 – The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie (The Mackenzies and Mcbrides #1)
#2 – Lady Isabella’s Scandalous Marriage (The Mackenzies and Mcbrides #2)
#3 – The Many Sins of Lord Cameron (The Mackenzies and Mcbrides #3)
#4 – The Duke’s Perfect Wife (The Mackenzies and Mcbrides #4)
#5 – A Mackenzie Family Christmas: The Perfect Gift (The Mackenzies and Mcbrides #4.5)
#6 – The Seduction of Elliot McBride (The Mackenzies and Mcbrides #5)
#7 – The Untamed Mackenzie (The Mackenzies and Mcbrides #5.5)
#8 – The Wicked Deeds of Daniel Mackenzie (The Mackenzies and Mcbrides #6)
#9 – Scandal and the Duchess (The Mackenzies and Mcbrides #6.5)
#10 – Rules for a Proper Governess (The Mackenzies and Mcbrides #7)
#11 – A Mackenzie Clan Gathering (The Mackenzies and Mcbrides #8.5)
#12 – The Stolen Mackenzie Bride (The Mackenzies and Mcbrides #8)

Highland Awakening (Highland Knights #2) by Jennifer Haymore – ARC Review

25852663

Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Ooooooo this book was soooooo freakin’ gooooooood!  And here I thought I loved Duncan and Grace’s story from Highland Heat!

Highland Awakening is book #2 in the Highland Knights series written by Jennifer Haymore.  I was super excited when I went on my lunch break a few weeks back and saw an email from NetGalley saying that it was already available for request!  LoveSwept is not due to release it until March 29, 2016 but I was lucky enough to get an ARC so here is my review!  I’m literally all gitty!

This book was extremely well written.  Then again, the last one was superb as well.  Come to think of it…I don’t think that I ever posted my review for it in my blog.  I know I posted it on GoodReads but I’ll have to go back and check if I posted it anywhere else.  If not then I shall have to remedy that!

Both hero and heroine, Cam and Esme, were the perfect characters in my opinion.  He was brooding and take charge, yet a caring and honorable man.  Even though Cam had the tendency to do things pretty much to control Esme, there wasn’t even a moment when I could really be pissed off at him.  You could tell from his thoughts that he wasn’t doing it just to be an asshole.  She was shy and clumsy, yet adventurous and strong deep down where none but Cam could see.  I loved how as a ‘Lady’ she did what she wanted with the writing romance stories in secret, despite the possibility of being discovered.  Both characters had really good back stories which I loved and there was murder, mystery, and sexiness all up in this book.  Here is the synopsis from NetGalley:

As the secret author of racy romances, Lady Esme Hawkins goes to great lengths to protect her family’s honor. Which is why she carefully disguises herself before entering a notorious bordello to do research. But when Esme comes face-to-face with a brooding Highland bodyguard, she can’t easily refuse a harmless kiss . . . a kiss that inflames desires ripped from the pages of her novels. Acting on them, however, would risk revealing Esme’s identity—and the fact that she’s engaged to another man.

As a Highland Knight sworn to protect the crown, Camden McLeod never expected to follow his client into a bordello—nor could he anticipate meeting a bright, innocent lass with lush lips and eyes the color of the sea. Instantly, Cam knows he must possess her. But to do so, he’ll need to give up his rakish ways, embrace his role as heir to his despised father, and snuff out a deadly threat to his brothers in arms. By comparison, winning Esme away from her insipid fiancé will be pure pleasure.

You guys have got to read this book!  I just looked it up and I am super excited that Colin and Emilia’s book is going to be coming out in August!  Oh I just can’t wait!!  This book totally deserved the 5 starts that I rated it….maybe I should move to a 10 star system though because it was just that good!

Here are the other stories in Jennifer Haymore’s Highland Knights series:

#1 – A Highlander’s Heart (Highland Knights #0.5)
#2 – Highland Heat (Highland Knights #1)
#3 – Highland Awakening (Highland Knights #2) – expected release March 29th, 2016
#4 – Her Wicked Highlander (Highland Knights #2.5 – Captured by a Celtic Warrior)
#5 – Highland Temptation (Highland Knights #3) – expected release August 9th, 2016

Alien Indiscretions (Clans of Kalquor #9) by Tracy St. John – Book Review

Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆

Boy am I exhausted after reading this book.  A really good exhausted though!  The ‘staying up until 2AM when I know I have to get up for work at 5:30AM’ kinda exhausted!!!  😀

Alien Indiscretions is the 9th book in the Clans of Kalquor series written by Tracy St. John.  It is one of my favorite SciFi Erotica series and I LOVE TELLING EVERYONE I KNOW ABOUT IT!!  Here is the Goodreads except from this particular book:

Cissy Salter is more than ready to shed Earth’s repression when she moves to the planet Kalquor. She leaps headlong into drinking, partying, and liaisons with young alien men. She would be having the time of her life if not for the disapproval of a certain rich, gorgeous Dramok she can’t avoid. She’d love to despise him, but her heart has other ideas.

Dramok Diltan sees the bawdy, unrefined Cissy as a thorn in his side. The last thing he needs is a woman who drives him crazy every time they meet. Yet the spark in her eyes kindles a fire he can’t ignore. His enthralled clanmates Wal and Rolat are determined to get the two to stop fighting, at least long enough to explore the possibility of making Cissy part of their clan. When they discover Diltan’s past misdeeds, Wal and Rolat issue an ultimatum: help them seduce the Earth woman or face punishment.

As Cissy and Clan Diltan discover each other’s true nature and love blooms, the long-hidden secrets of Kalquor’s leadership are revealed. An old conspiracy brought to light shatters Kalquor’s peace, driving the Empire apart … and tearing Cissy from the arms of the three men she can no longer live without.

As always I LOVE these characters!  Cissy was a rambunctious chick with an awesome attitude, and Diltan (a congressman), Wal (a judge), and Rolat (a badass in charge of the Penal Colonies) fit very well with her.  There were a few things that I will say I was a bit disappointed in though.

Sadly not a lot of one-on-one meetings happened between the chick and the clan members in this specific story.  There was one lunch date that Cissy had with Diltan, but I honestly don’t recall Rolat or Wal getting any alone time with her.  Hmmmmm……I like when the previous books have had each of the guys spending individual time with the Matara.  You always get to see what makes him so special that way.

My next “Blah” thought isn’t really about this book in particular but I guess relates to all the Clan of Kalquor books.  I’ve noticed that the stories that revolve around the clan finding their female focus stickily on MF sex.  Yes the other clan members are there when it’s happening but anyone who has read the Clan Beginnings spin-off series knows that these clans are made up of 3 males who are intimate lovers.  The Matara focused books make small mention of this in different parts of them, but you never see dude on dude action in them!!  UGH!!  Maybe I’m a weirdo but as a female who doesn’t have manly parts, I find 2 guys getting freaky with each other super hot.  That’s what I LOVE about the  Clan Beginnings series!!  It has MM/MMM all over the place because the story is about how the Dramok, Imdiko, and Nobek become a clan.  It’s like once the Marata comes into the picture, the guys lose their passion for each other.  It makes me sad deep down inside….

Lastly, this is book specific, I just couldn’t get with the whole master/slave thing in this one.  I couldn’t take it seriously without laughing when Cissy would call one of them “Master”.   To each their own fetish or fantasy I suppose.  I’m down for domination and control being taken over me but I ain’t calling any man “Master”!

This particular book gets really into the political issues that are going on in the world of Kalquor which I got super antsy over.  I loved how it expanded on things that happened in the first book as well as the following ones.  You really need to read it after the others in the series so that you can understand how the instability of the Kalquor Empire came about.

For the best overall feel of the world, here is my personal preferred reading order of all the Clans of Kalquor stories:
#1 – Clan, Honor, and Empire (Clan Beginnings #3)
#2 – Alien Embrace (Clans of Kalquor #1)
#3 – Clan and Crown (Clan Beginnings #4)
#4 – Alien Rule (Clans of Kalquor #2)
#5 – Michaela (First Mataras #1)
#6 – To Clan and Conquer (Clan Beginnings, #1)
#7 – Alien Conquest (Clans of Kalquor #3)
#8 – Sister Katherine (Nuns of Europa #1)
#9 – Alien Salvation (Clans of Kalquor #4)
#10 – Clan and Conviction (Clan Beginnings #2)
#11 – Alien Slave (Clans of Kalquor #5)
#12 – Alien Redemption (Clans of Kalquor #6)
#13 – Alien Refuge (Clans of Kalquor #7)
#14 – Alien Caged (Clans of Kalquor #8)
#15 – Alien Indiscretions (Clans of Kalquor #9)

Disclaimer: All of these books have some form of MMM, MMMF, BDSM, and/or a bunch of other sexual stuff so just a heads up.  GOD I LOVE THESE BOOKS!

Alien Caged (Clans of Kalquor #8) by Tracy St. John – Book Review

Rating: ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆

Boohoo….  😦

I absolutely love the Clans of Kalquor series by Tracy St. John, but sadly this one was probably my least favorite of all the Kalquor books I’ve read so far.  😥  Alien Caged is the 8th book of one of the best SciFi Erotica book series ever!  Check out the excerpt for it:

For most, the Earth/Kalquor War ended years ago. Yet veteran destroyer captain Zemos and clanmates Oret and Miragin have been captured by a renegade Earther battlecruiser. They’ve been held in a cell for months now, with no idea where their ultimate fate lies. Threatened daily, they know their lives can end at any moment. The only bright spot during their imprisonment has been the lovely woman who brings them their meals and offers the one friendly face amongst their enemies.

Elisa Mackenzie is among the desperate Earthers trying to survive in the wake of Armageddon. Surrounded by fanatics who won’t give up a long-lost war, she can’t let herself care for the Kalquorians the ship has taken prisoner. Her lonely heart, empty for so long, has other ideas. Knowing the Kalquorians are dangerous and her fanatical shipmates are even more so, Elisa fights her feelings in vain. Ignoring the harsh lessons of long-lost youth, she falls in love.

Zemos, Oret, and Miragin know they must escape before the Earthers deliver them to an unthinkable end. They also know the key to opening their cage means turning on the woman who has infiltrated their fierce hearts. Elisa already has their adoration. She deserves their protection and care as well, but enemies both new and ancient threaten the Kalquorian Empire. To save their people and themselves, the three men may have to destroy the woman who would complete their clan.

This story didn’t feel as strong in my opinion as all the books that proceeded it.  I feel like it lacked that little UMPH which all the other stories had.  While the others keep you on the edge of your seat with a driven purpose, this story felt mosty as if it was written as an after thought.  Feeling like a filler story, you would think that maybe everyone wanted these specific characters to finally get the own book.  Only problem is that they were brand new characters, never before mentioned, so that was not the case.  Unless I have completely forgotten about them which I find hard to believe given my love for these books.

Earther females in the Kalquor books have always had super tragic pasts which helps the reader become drawn to them on an emotion level.  The heroine of this book, Elisa, wasn’t as emotionally traumatized as the other Earther females from previous stories.  An innocent kiss when she was still a kid got her in trouble, but there was no real tragedy for me to gravitate towards her as a character.

I did like the Kalquorians in this book though!  Zemos, Oret, and Miragin were an older clan who was willing to pick a Matara unable to give them children.  Hell, they weren’t even interested in having offspring because they were so focused on their careers.  That worked out great for Elise, a woman in her fifties, but it was sad that babies were not ever going to be an end result for this clan.  Babies make the world a happy place!

I know all of the Kalquor books have been MMM or MMMF strictly including claned or potential clan members but after reading this one I hope that Joseph Walker, a Earther, and the single Nobek Almon get a story of their infatuation of each other!  Oh yes indeed!!

Check out my personal preferred reading order of all the Clans of Kalquor stories:
#1 – Clan, Honor, and Empire (Clan Beginnings #3)
#2 – Alien Embrace (Clans of Kalquor #1)
#3 – Clan and Crown (Clan Beginnings #4)
#4 – Alien Rule (Clans of Kalquor #2)
#5 – Michaela (First Mataras #1)
#6 – To Clan and Conquer (Clan Beginnings, #1)
#7 – Alien Conquest (Clans of Kalquor #3)
#8 – Sister Katherine (Nuns of Europa #1)
#9 – Alien Salvation (Clans of Kalquor #4)
#10 – Clan and Conviction (Clan Beginnings #2)
#11 – Alien Slave (Clans of Kalquor #5)

Talon (Uncompromising #1) by Sybil Bartel – Book Review

talon

Rating: ★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆

Ugh!  This book took me over a month to finish reading!  It’s not that the writing was bad, I actually believe it was extremely well written.  It was just missing that something that usually sparks that ‘Must Read’ mentality in me which makes me sad.  😦

Talon is the first book in the Uncompromising series by Sybil Bartel.  I had never heard about the author until I came across the super hot book cover on NetGalley.  Total man candy!  Being a lover of erotica and romance books, the description of the book sounded intriguing and dramatic enough to spark my interest.  This is the synopsis from NetGalley:

I surf.
I fuck.
I pretend to smile.

Two years ago my life was perfect, until it wasn’t. I scattered my wife’s ashes then walked away from the Marines. I didn’t think I had anything else to lose.

I was wrong.

The blond showed up at my surf shop, beaten and stabbed. I did what I was trained to do—I stitched her up. I didn’t have a clue who she was and I told myself I didn’t care. Until they came looking for her.

I swore I’d take my last breath before I let anyone else hurt her except I didn’t know she was keeping a deadly secret. Now I had two choices, her life or mine.

Marriage and combat taught me the same thing—I was no one’s hero. And I was about to prove it.

Sounds super good right?  I had really high hopes for this book but I honestly just couldn’t get into like I wanted to, and believe me….I TRIED!!  I think the main thing that just didn’t work for me was the fact that it was written in first person.  I should have guessed that it would be given the description, but it had been so long since I’d read a first person book that I had forgotten how much I disliked them.  First person always tends to make the book feel as if it’s dragging on and on because you’re in a single persons mind 24/7.  I can barely stand being trapped in my own mind day in and day out, let alone a story book characters!

The second thing that just didn’t work for me was the personalities of the two main characters.  The female’s self pity and hatefulness towards herself was just too much and I kinda wished something would happen in the book that would lead to her untimely death. Damn…I don’t think I’ve ever wanted a heroine to actually die in any book that I’ve read, but this chick was pissing be off with all the depression!  Yes…life sucks sometimes and we get stuck in shitty ass situations, but damn!  You really can’t find SOMETHING TO BE POSITIVE ABOUT?!??  Then there was Talon’s asshole self.  He was selfish, controlling, and just a prick to everyone.  It didn’t matter if they asked him a simple kind-hearted question, he was always an asshole with how he responded to them.  He’s the type of dude I could imagine kicking a puppy, the asshole!  He’s a cocky asshole, while she’s a depressed train wreak.  Their relationship is probably the worst possible idea ever.

I hate saying negative things about books because I know how much time and energy goes into writing them.  Just because it wasn’t really a book for me, I think it was decent enough to tell others to give it a shot.  I say this because while I didn’t care for the lead characters in this book, I’m about 85% sure that I will definitely end up reading the next in the series.  I really liked some of the other characters that made appearances and want to know what is going to happen to them!  I just hope I can get past the first person thing.

Here are the stories planned so far for the Uncompromising series:

#1 – Talon
#2 – Neil – expected release September 1st, 2016
#3 – Andre – expected release March 1st, 2017
#4 – Roark – expected release September 1st, 2017

An easy, quick read, Their Kidnapped Bride is the first book in Vanessa Vale‘s Bridgewater Ménage series.  I thought it was pretty good if you can handle overly dominate males.  Maybe it makes be unconventional or just a straight out freak, but stories that have more than one guy with a single chick….HOT DAMN!

The main thing I liked about this book was how it got right into the meat of the story.  It starts with Emma’s asshole brother selling her to a brothel.  Most books spend the first half trying to set the scene for the main event but this one was quick to get to the point.  I will say that something about the part of the story when it flashes back to her memory of watching her brother with the housemaid made me uneasy.  Couldn’t honestly grasp why but geez, come on now?  Can guys not keep it in their pants?  Even married ones??  Seems like there is no hope left for love these days.

“[His wife] had no grounds to protest or complain about a husband’s peccadillo.  A wife was completely at the mercy of her husband.”

I was reeling at that those lines!  On any other day I’m sure that I wouldn’t have thought much on it, it’s just an imaginative story anyway.  But after my post “….cause I’m a BITCH the other day, I’ve had a lot of epiphanies popping into my mind in regards to society’s take on men being superior to women.  I think that was the hardest part for me to swallow of this book.  The demands that Ian and Kane make of Emma, despite their ‘cherishing her’, felt too demeaning of the female character.

But other than my overly feminist thoughts, I would totally give the others in this series a shot.  Here are the books in the Bridgewater Ménage series:

#1 – Their Kidnapped Bride
#2 – Their Wayward Bride
#3 – Their Captivated Bride
#4 – Their Treasured Bride
#5 – Their Christmas Bride (Novella)
#6 – Their Reluctant Bride

Unexpectedly Yours by Coleen Kwan – ARC Review

Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆

I received Unexpectedly Yours as an ARC on NetGalley and it was such a cute story!

Written by Coleen Kwan it will be released March 14th, 2016 by Entangled Publishing.

I have to admit that as I initially went through this book, I bounced back and forth between loving the hell out of it and getting straight out pissed off.  All of these happy/mad feelings  stemmed from the female lead Hannah.  She’s your typical new divorcee who is still emotionally trying to get past a failed marriage, so her thoughts and feelings are all over the place. Throw an unexpected baby into the mix and it’s bound to get crazy frustrating for someone who has never been in those shoes before. Hannah’s wishy washiness in her feelings for Derek made me mad most often than not because I can’t stand indecisiveness. Yeah she had a crap marriage but assuming that her brother’s childhood friend was just like her ex-husband, when they pretty much grew up together, seemed childish and immature.  And thinking that someone taking care of her was a weakness?  That’s a pitifully sad thought process and I’m glad that by the end of the story she grew up and pushed past her fears of loving someone again instead of ending up alone.

I really liked Derek though.  He was a very well rounded character and seemed like an all around good guy despite all the crap that people tried to judge him for.  I honestly can’t think of a single moment in the book where I was mad at him like I was with Hannah.  You really feel for him when you see his thoughts and what a genuine person he is.

I was somewhat thrown by the fact that you didn’t even find out Hannah was pregos until the last 40% of the book.  It wasn’t even discovered that she was expecting until this point.  For it having the cover that it did, I would have thought most of the book would have revolved around the pregnancy.  Then again, to really get pulled into loving the characters, you had to see the base of their relationship build to make it seem more realistic. So I can get with that.

Overall this was a very relaxing read and I would totally recommend it to others.  Not sure if Kwan plan’s on turning this book into a series, but I sure hope that Hannah’s brother Caleb gets a book because he and Amber seemed like they would be a good match!  😉

….cause I’m a BITCH

Oh lordy I feel a change a comin’ on!

**A disclaimer to newbies who come across my blog….I am a potty mouth to a fault so you have been fuckin’ forewarned in advance!

While it’s been a good minute since my last post, most of my recent ones have been about my awesome book reviews whereas this blog was originally created as a way for me to stay motivated on my weight loss journey almost a year ago. Sadly my weight loss hit a brick wall for a few months but I have finally started breaking the damn thing down to commence where I left off, so YAY! But after some serious thinking and a pissy morning, I feel that it is time to expand my horizons and blog to include all of my personality traits which would include….well…..the best way to put it would be me…well……being a BITCH!

That word was used to describe me quite a bit when I was in my early 20s, and oh yes was there a negative connotation attached to it when it was thrown my way. I was opinionated and stubborn to the point of annoying other people. But as I “grew up mentally and emotionally”, the term was less predominate in people’s first thoughts of me and I became a “grown up”. But let’s get fuckin’ real here. The only reason I “grew up mentally and emotionally” was to appease everyone else because I was more concerned about their opinion of me rather than my own. As the years went on I started keeping more and more of my thoughts to myself and not saying things that my younger self would have openly shouted loud and proud. And in the process of “growing up” I feel like I’ve lost myself. Bitch was a bad thing to be associated with and let’s be honest ladies, it hurts the feelings and pride a little when someone drops the big B word to describe you.

The sad thing though is that as I look at myself now in my early 30s, I was way happier back when I was labeled this negative “Bitch” word. Back then I was being myself and not letting everyone else’s opinions of me control how I viewed myself, yet now I see that I’ve done nothing but conform to be what others wished for me to be. I’ve always found myself putting everyone else before myself when the most important thing should have been me taking care of me first and foremost. I just can’t do this shit anymore and I’m tired of keeping my fuckin’ mouth shut. I’m not out to disrespect anyone and will never deliberately hurt another person’s feelings….well….unless you are purposefully being an asshole to me. Then I’m not above dropping to your level and making you feel just as shitty as you’ve got me feeling! I’m done with being someone else’s negative version of a Bitch! I’m nobody’s BITCH but my own damn it! And I’m going to be the best BITCH I can be…a Bold Individual That Cultivates Herself!!

So to start off my ‘….cause I’m a BITCH‘ blog, I thought it would be best for me to rant about a topic that has weighed heavily on my mind the past few months and rejump-started my BITCH mentality back into play. I’ll still post my normal ARC review, but let us right now focus on a topic that we see all the time. One that we experience multiple times a day in fact. The ultimate truth that…..

…….it’s the woman’s job to be the man’s Bitch and bow to his will.

Fuckin’ amazing isn’t it?! I guess I’ve been blind to this most of my life, which could in fact explain my being single. But I’m happy to say that my eyes have finally been opened to the reality of the world and my ‘bitch’ place in it. Not just being a positive Bitch, but someone else’s bitch. Thank you society for putting all of us with a vagina in our places!!

No this isn’t a bashing everything-with-a-penis blog post, but let’s just get real for a moment and look at how society has mind fucked us females since the beginning.

Growing up, I was brought up to be independent, have confidence, think for myself, and question everything. I couldn’t have asked for better parents and I know that I was loved even despite my stubborn ways. But while my parents had always raised me equally to my brother and sister, the older I’ve gotten the more I’ve caught glimpses of how the equality of our raising was somewhat in reality an illusion. I used to always think it was because my brother was the baby of the family, that that was why he was more apt to get what he wanted, get his side taken most often than not, or his lunch made for him when he would go to work. Maybe it’s just the middle child syndrome digging it’s claws in but the more I think back, there had to be more to it than just him being the youngest of my specific group of spawnish siblings.

Whether brother/sister, wife/husband, mother/son, father/daughter, whatever the male/female relationship….9 times out of 10, it is the females that are expected to do all the bullshit tasks such as do the dishes, go to the grocrery store, cook the food, wash the clothes, and keep the house clean. All this while the males sits on their asses enjoying the carefree life around them. These tasks aren’t typically asked of a female in wonderful ways like, “Oh great and mighty Persefi! Would you chance being even more awesome then you already are on this fine day? Could you wash all of those bowls, plates, cups, and silverware in that sink over there yonder, which I have let pile up over the last week? I know that you’ve washed all of your dishes after using them, and that I didn’t even think to rinse the food gunk off of the ones that I placed in there, but could you be a dear and continue to promote my laziness?” Things like washing the fucking dishes are silently expected from females because, yeah…..asking would be a fucking joke given how stupid it sounds being spoken out loud! And let’s not forget that since women have always done such tasks, they should continue to do these things because that’s just how it’s always been. Must be nice not having too much responsibility.

Real life experience here….
So I was cooking dinner one night looooong ago and there were dishes in the sink, as there typically always are. This is one of my biggest pet peeves for those that know me. Luckily in this case there were only like 2 plates and a few forks and spoons, so my OCD didn’t trip out on me too bad. But being the reasonable person that I am, thinking to equally divide tasks amongst those living in the house, I looked over at the guy that happened to be in the room and this is the short and sweet conversation that was had: (my words/his words)

“Hey, since I’m cooking could you help out and do the dishes?”
“Uh….no.”
“Uh…..why not?”
“Because I don’t do things like dishes.”

This MF sees me doing the dishes all of the time and I really had to rein in the explosion that was bubbling in the back of my mind. But the more I thought about what he said the sadder I got. Someone who I cared about, who I thought cared about me, in the course of about 10 seconds let it be known where he thought my place was. Doing dishes was beneath him but not me. My sister used to always compare me to a stale twinkie growing up because I was always tough on the outside but a total sap on the inside (I’m the weirdo that could find 6 different moments in the movie Die Hard to cry). So unknowing to this non-dish washing ass, after crawling under a rock and crying about something that they would deem stupid, I put on my big girl panties and didn’t let it show that the shit phased me. These same types of interactions happen here and there with many of the guys that I know. Not them purposefully trying to put us females down but even subconsciously it all feels the same to us. Degrading. And let’s look at reality….shit will always be shit despite what kind of perfume you slather on it to try and cover up the smell.

This superiority mess just erks my fucking nerves! But oooooooh I forgot!

Lets look at the situation of some significant other issues that I’ve witnessed. He has to drive to work and put in a hard 8hrs of work only to face driving home in an hour of traffic. This is why he is too tired to help out around the house when he gets home. Awwww you poor baby! How can I not take pity on you for having done such a manly task of working that day? Us females wouldn’t have a single idea what it is like to experience the stressfulness of a 9-5 job. Oh no! We couldn’t possibly know what it’s like to deal with shitty bosses, work for less pay, or have more responsibility thrown on us because we have to prove our worth in the work place. Wait….WHAT??? These bitches can have jobs TOO?!??? Now you just lyin’!!

How about when kids are involved? I’m not blessed yet in this life to have any of my own, which according to my grandmother is obviously a good thing given that “[I’m] just not fit to be a mother.” But that comment is a topic for another blog post because I’ve got loooooooads to say about that bullshit opinion. But back to the hypothetical me with children. When the time comes and I’m lucky enough to have a whole horde of them, heaven help the man who fathered them if he takes the following outlook: “It is the woman’s place to tend to the children and the home. Not the man’s.” Guess who would be finding his shit on the lawn when he got home from a loooooong haaaaaard day at work?

So quite a few years back, I had just broken up with this assholeish guy and one of my buddies was cool enough to come over and listen to me sulk as I drowned my sorrow away in McCormick Vodka. Cheap nasty shit McCormicks is but my buddy friend is one of the most genuinely good without-a-vagina individuals that I know. While I was drunkenly whining about how everything-with-a-penis was evil and out to break everything-with-a-vagina’s heart, one of these evil beings with a penis decided it would be a good day to stop his truck, get out, and approach my friend and I with the hope of “[speaking] to [us] about the word of God”. Let me break this down for you…..some random fuckin’ dude wanted to go all ‘Jesus is the way’ on us, not knowing if we were Buddhist, Christian, or whatever, all because we happened to be sitting out on the front porch. But despite me despising those who push their beliefs on others, especially those you don’t even know, I thought to myself in my drunken stupor, ‘Maybe this is a sign that everything will be alright? I could use some cheering up and guidance!‘. But ooooooooh nooooooooo!

Long story short, the only thing I can remember this bastard saying was, “The woman’s place is in the home caring for the children, keeping the house, and tending to her husband’s needs. The husband’s place is to financially provide for his family.” What a great fantasy this fucktard was living in! Any person lucky enough to have a job that can support their significant other and children, that also provides the opportunity for their other-half to not have to work, is a rare thing in today’s economy. Therefor, you ASSHOLE, your wife will most likely have to have some kind of job to help YOU out with your “duties to your family”. So regardless of her working her ass off with a job, you are telling me that she is still expected to maintain these “God ordained” tasks of tending to you, the kiddos, and house because of expectations that have been set in place since the beginning of time? You have got to be fucking kidding me! I thought all forms of relationships were about compromise and helping each other out in all ways. But what the fuck do I know, huh? I’m not married.

And let me say that not every male and female has this outdated mentality of ‘the woman’s place’ set in their thinking, but I would press to say that at least 75% of the people I know do, which is just fucking sad. And yes, it’s not just men who think this but sadly some women have been conditioned to live this way as well. Give, give, give, give, give. Instead of standing up for each other, we throw each other under the bus.

My thoughts upon an event that happened just this morning upon learning that my food from the night before was given to someone who had the funds and ability to go get there own damn food:

“I’m glad I’m the one who worked for that pizza you volunteered to him without even asking if I was planning on eating it. While you are excited to bow down to every demand and give everything you have the ability to, including things that are not yours to give, you have in fact not only made yourself a slave to man but made me his bitch in the process as well.”

I just can’t fuckin’ process this shit!

So you have a higher salary than she does. So what? Maybe she’s got a degree just as you do but hasn’t gotten the chance in her career to justify getting paid a 6-digit income yet. It doesn’t mean that she works any less hard than you do.

So your money is what pays for the roof over her head. Who gives a fuck? It’s her money that pays for all the mediocre shit like food, toilet paper, and paper plates that YOU need because YOU can’t stand to do the fucking dishes and she’s just too tired of doing them but doesn’t want to disappoint YOU or make YOU angry with her.

For those of you who think that solely supplying shelter gives you some kind of supiriority over others or that you making more money than them means you are less responsible for the daily ‘pointless’ responsibilities of life, the reality is that without your bitches you wouldn’t even know how to pay your own fuckin’ bills, let alone make your own damn doctor’s appointment.

And while I might be a bitch for speaking out and saying FUCK YOU to those who would try and put me in my place as a “woman”, at least I can stand proudly and know that while my over opinionated-self will be whispered about behind my back because your too scared to say that ahit to my face, at least I will never be another person’s bitch. Only my own.
